Dr. Tom Abruzzo (he/him) is an arts leader, educator, researcher, social justice advocate, pianist, and music director whose career has taken him from his home state of New Jersey to arts communities across the country, spanning Alaska to Florida. He is a faculty member in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego. He is also a researcher and consultant with the Nonprofit Institute.


Tom’s work bridges artistic practice and academic inquiry. He holds a PhD with research centered on inclusive leadership in the nonprofit performing arts sector, examining the paradox of uniqueness and belongingness within historically exclusionary environments. His previous academic experience includes four years as a Doctoral Research Assistant at the Nonprofit Institute, where he continues to support nonprofit leaders in using research for program planning, evaluation, and organizational decision-making.


Throughout his career, Tom has led educational and mission-driven arts programs, including internship initiatives, STEAM camps, music ensembles, and corporate entertainment projects. He has also served on leadership teams for the Davis Shakespeare Festival and Vacancy Arts Collective, contributing to the development of equitable and sustainable artistic practices.


Tom holds a Master’s degree in Arts Leadership and Cultural Management from Colorado State University and a BA in Music from Rowan University. He is a proud member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus.
